Published charts disagree by a few inches — these are common midpoints, not rules. Blankets also relax an inch or two after washing and use.
Why the swatch method beats yarn tables
“How much yarn do I need for a blanket” has no honest one-number answer: a tight single crochet drinks far more yarn than an airy granny stitch at the same size, and tension varies between hands. Generic tables spread over a range as wide as 1200–1800 yards for the same throw.
The swatch method sidesteps all of it: make a swatch in your yarn, your stitch, your tension; measure what it used (unravel it and measure, or weigh it and convert by the ball band); the calculator scales by area and adds a 10% buffer for seaming and gauge drift. Ten minutes of swatching converts a guess into a number you can shop with.
Starting chain math, for reference: width ÷ 4 × stitch gauge, plus one turning chain for single crochet — taller stitches need two or three turning chains, and the calculator’s stitch count still applies.

How many chains do I start with?
Width ÷ 4 × stitch gauge (per 4 in) + 1 turning chain for sc. A 40-inch blanket at 16 sts/4in → 160 sts → chain 161.
How much yarn do I need?
Use the swatch box above — it scales your real usage by area with a 10% buffer. Tables can only give wide ranges.
What are standard blanket sizes?

Can I work in centimeters?
